The Recruiter's Coach newsletter - March 2009
johnadams — 1 March 2009 - 9:00am
On a personal note, as nature's green shoots pop up all around us I start to feel more positive and energised. Unfortunately the green shoots of economic recovery are not so evident. For most sectors things remain slow. However this should not stop us from using this as an opportunity to review our strategy, our successes and challenges and devising a plan for the future. Through my newsletters I hope to provide you with some food for thought to help you as you move forward. If you have any thoughts or ideas as to subjects you would like me to cover in my newsletter then please email me at ja@recruiterscoach.co.uk
Performing in Challenging Times
It is safe to say that most businesses are suffering from the downturn in the market. Here are three ideas to consider as part of your personal success plan.
It is all in the Attitude: Start with taking on stock on how you are dealing with the market conditions. Have you a positive outlook or are you all 'doom and gloom'? This will be important as to how you navigate your way out of the downturn. Maintaining a positive state of mind is imperative to being successful. Make sure you are not being your own worst enemy!
Ignore all the Negative Hype: Bad news sells as it preys on our fears and newspapers know this! It is important to keep an objective mind on what you read and remember that there are always people making money and being successful. Remember there are always opportunities in adversity so steer clear of the negative press. On a personal note I started my own agency in 2000 when we had the last down turn and still managed to be successful!
Review your Strategy: If you want something different then you need to do something different. Do not be afraid to be innovative. This could be to look at a different market sector, review your sales approach or set yourself some milestones and goals to help motivate you through the down turn. They say 'failing to plan is planning to fail' so it is important to work on your own personal success strategy.

A Life with no Regrets!
There is the well known saying ‘if you do not know where you are going, any road will take you there’
For some people taking life as it comes works well. They may have some loose wishes or desires that get met along the way however overall they are happy to just ‘go with the flow’. However for the majority of people there will ultimately be an underlying sense of lack of achievement at some point on the journey. This may manifest itself on and off or be a feeling that there is something missing in their life however they cannot put their finger on it. For many their will be a subconscious fear that they will look back on their life and feel regrets for actions or decisions they wish they had made however just didn’t get around to it.
There is a great coaching tool called the ‘Rocking Chair’ exercise that is designed to get you to take a step into the future. It enables you to fast forward in time and to look back on your life having been successful and having achieved all that you set out to achieve.
The exercise is a great way to get a perspective on what is really important to you and enables you to take corrective action to align your current trajectory with your ideal life. It looks at what you need to do differently and also what mind set changes are required to reach your ideal end destination.
It is therefore important from time to time to check that you are heading in the right direction and that any regrets will be few and not too serious.

Life after Recruitment
When there is a downturn in the market it is often a trigger for many to re-evaluate their commitment to their current job, employer, career and life direction. When things are going well people in general will accept their lot and not look to rock the boat too much. However when the going gets tough and the already low motivation or enthusiasm is falling further it can be time to take action.
For most recruiters the industry has become tougher over the last few months and the outlook does not look promising, certainly in the short term. This will certainly prompt a number of recruiters to question their commitment to continue in the recruitment industry. However it is never an easy decision to make to leave an industry where you may have many years under your belt or have a standard of living that will be difficult to replicate in the short term. However this should not stand in your way if you believe that your future career is outside the recruitment industry.
The important factor is that you take the correct steps to getting a clear picture as to what you want to do with the next stage of your career. As most recruiters know, changing career is not easy however is not impossible. If you are going to invest the time, effort and resources in making the change it will be important to know that it is the right one!
We can support you with all aspects of the process from understanding your true motivations, looking at transferable skills and interest, exploring options and ultimately supporting you with the career change.
And now for some Quotes…
